We are Geographers

A good geographer is someone who is excited about the dynamics and aspects of the world; they have an enthusiasm to better understand the people, places and environments within it. 

At Holland Junior School, geographers are encouraged to understand why and how places are changing and how this has had an impact on the past, present and future world we live in. Not only does it connect our individual geographers to their community by identifying, locating and exploring their local surroundings, it allows the children to link these to wider contexts around the world. 

Underpinning this is a strong component that deepens children’s geographical thinking and therefore makes them an excellent geographer. 

We teach the full National Curriculum for Geography.

We use the themes from the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) which provides themes for every year group from Year 3 – Year 6.

The IPC has been developed to provide support to teachers so that four main aims can be achieved.  They are:

• To help children learn the subject knowledge, skills and understandings they need to become aware of the world around them
• To help children develop the personal skills they need to take an active part in the world throughout their lives
• To help children develop an international mindset alongside their awareness of their own nationality
• To do each of these in ways which take into account up-to-date research into how children learn and how they can be encouraged to be life-long learners

Each year, Holland Junior School arrange a number of activities that take place off the school site and/or out of school hours, which support the aim of providing opportunities that enrich the Geography curriculum, enabling the children to have first-hand experience of a wide range of topics and activities. Such activities will include visits to the beach, local airports, areas of woodland, inner city and rural areas to cover a breadth of geographical experiences. These educational visits take place to develop and deepen the knowledge and understanding of the geographical skills that have been learnt within the classroom and provide the opportunity to develop fieldwork skills across all Key Stages.
